The project Resonances of Stones aims to develop an approach to art that goes beyond static physical exhibitions, instead creating a dynamic and living dialogue between artworks, historical sites, and the audience scattered around the globe. The latter is done through the exploitation of the potential of the latest virtual and augmented reality technologies.

The integration of music, architecture, and cultural narrative offers immersive experiences in which art interacts with historical spaces and the surrounding soundscapes, providing a path of knowledge that embraces both the cultural and emotional dimensions.

In this perspective, the project is not only a reflection on diversity and the meeting of cultures, but also an invitation to explore new models of perceiving and understanding art, which embrace the complexity of the cultural contexts in which the artworks are born and evolve. Resonances of Stones thus becomes a prototype that can be applied to a wide range of buildings and historical sites, creating a replicable model for the integration of art, music, and architectural space, with a strong educational and cultural impact.

Team

The project involves researchers from Greece, Italy, Poland, and Portugal and is coordinated by Alessandra Montali (CP, Italy), Bogna J. Gladden-Obidzińska (PTE, Poland), and José Revez (FBAUL, Portugal).

The team includes also Ella Nagy (musician, CP, Italy), Silvia Rio (independent singer, Italy), and Manolis Lianis (independent musician & sound engineer, Greece).

The project is possible thanks to the invitation and collaboration of the Director of the Festival Bazeos Tower, Naxos, Mario Vazaios.

The RoS team’s effort is supported by a special contribution from Mr. Mutuma Marangu and Kinya Marangu from The Mutuma Marangu Sculpture & Art Collection – TMMSAC – who have offered to share selected sculptures from the Collection, both in the digitalised 3D versions and physically, for the joint Mantinea Institute’s RoS and the Communities and Artistic Participation in Hybrid Environments – CAPHE – Virtual Tour Naxos 2025 exhibition. As Originating Convener of the Roots of Removal BRAMSA Movement fostering and promoting the Kisii region sculpture collection, the TMMSAC is providing RoS with the showcasing of priceless art from the Kenyan Master Sculptors: John Tabule Abuya Ogao, Gerard Motondi Oroo, Peter Kenyanya Oendo, and Robin Okeyo Mbera

The project’s structure

Resonances of Stones consists of two parts:

1. Prototyping activities carried out in collaboration with the CAPHE project and outside stakeholders

a) creation of the virtual – visual and acoustic – space of the Bazeos Tower in Naxos;
b) carrying out experimentation inside it
c) publication of results of the experimentation regarding the impact of the acoustic enhancement on the aesthetic experience of time and space;
d) execution of the phygital physical and virtual – tour of a selection of sculptures from the TMMSAC collection defined and acknowledged as Originating Convener in collaboration with the CAPHE project.

2. Application to a wide range of heritage sites and objects

Once the prototype has been completed and various exhibitions, research and performative experiments have been implemented, it will be utilised and promoted as a model for creative and technologically informed paradigm for architectural, landscape, and intangible heritage preservation.
