Past Experience and Formation
Barbara Wojtkowiak is a set designer, visual artist, and art educator whose practice explores the intersection of space, performance, and materiality in contemporary theatre, film, and site-specific art. Her work is grounded in a multidisciplinary approach that combines scenography, installation, costume, and visual composition, with a particular focus on the relationship between bodies, environments, light, and image as carriers of meaning and memory.
She graduated from the Theatre Faculty of the Academy of Performing Arts in Prague (DAMU) and further developed her artistic practice at the Institut del Teatre in Barcelona and the University of Vigo (Pontevedra). She also completed pedagogical training at the Magdalena Abakanowicz University of the Arts Poznań, which informs her parallel engagement in education and workshop-based artistic development.
Her professional trajectory is distinctly international, with artistic work realised across the Czech Republic, Spain, Germany, Poland, and Hungary. She has collaborated with leading theatre institutions, including the Teatr Dramatyczny and Teatr na Woli in Warsaw, and the Teatr Solskiego in Tarnów, and contributed to projects for major cultural organisations such as Zachęta National Gallery of Art and the Zbigniew Raszewski Theatre Institute, as well as the Prague Quadrennial of Performance Design and Space. Her long-term involvement in the programme Lato w teatrze reflects her commitment to participatory and educational cultural practices.
Current Engagements
Her artistic methodology integrates spatial thinking with performative processes and hands-on work with materials, emphasising scenography as an experiential and relational practice. She develops international projects in collaboration with European cultural institutions and is the founder of the Creative Studio Inżynierska (Inżynierska Pracownia Twórcza) in Warsaw, where she leads the workshop series Do dzieła!, fostering creative experimentation and preparation courses for prospective art academy students.
