Senior Researcher • Project Leader • AR&VR Sculptor • Curator at Mantinea Institute

José Manuel Revez is an Assistant Professor in the Sculpture Department of the Faculty of Fine Arts at the University of Lisbon and an Integrated Researcher at CIEBA (Centre for Research and Studies in Fine Arts). He holds a PhD in Sculpture with a specialisation in Digital Sculpture from the University of Lisbon.

His research and teaching focus on Digital Sculpture, Virtual and Augmented Reality Sculpture, 3D representation and modelling, and 3D scanning technologies. He is responsible for the development and implementation of virtual environment systems at both Bachelor’s and Master’s levels, with the aim of strengthening the integration of advanced digital tools in artistic practice, research, and higher education.

Professor Revez coordinates the Master’s Degree in Sculpture at the Faculty of Fine Arts, University of Lisbon, and serves as Coordinator of the Sculpture Research Group at CIEBA. His research interests include the creation of platforms for virtual sculpture applicable to multicultural and interdisciplinary contexts, as well as the development of projects dedicated to the digital documentation, interpretation, and re-valorisation of sculptural heritage, including gypsothecs. Through the use of 3D scanning, virtual environments, and immersive technologies, these projects seek to renew access to plaster cast collections and expand their relevance within contemporary artistic, pedagogical, and cultural frameworks.

He is also actively engaged in international and interdisciplinary research collaborations, including his contribution as a Leader to the Resonances of Stones project, an initiative that explores new forms of interaction between sculpture, sound, heritage sites, and audiences through virtual and augmented reality. Within this context, Professor Revez contributes his expertise in digital sculpture and immersive environments, supporting innovative approaches to cultural mediation and heritage preservation.

Through his work in projects such as CAPHE (Communities and Artistic Participation in Hybrid Environments), or Numerical Art: Fractality of the Universe, Professor Revez continues to advance research at the intersection of sculpture, technology, and heritage. His sustained research activity, project leadership, and scholarly publications reinforce his academic profile and support his progression toward full professorship, while contributing to the broader transformation of sculptural practice in digital and hybrid contexts.
